A group of Kinston High School students are helping feed the hungry over the holiday weekend.

While most folks in Lenoir County are enjoying Thanksgiving Day feasts with their families tomorrow, there are those who will go to bed hungry. Backpack Buddies, an outreach program spearheaded by several local churches, hopes to change that.

Kinston High sophomores Molly Riddick, Elizabeth Proctor, Abby Sargeant and Erin Stewart helped collect boxes of food. Those items will be placed in backpacks and distributed to area youths who have a dire need for food, English teacher Christel Carlyle said.

According to Carlyle, the students are identified by their elementary school counselors. While only a dozen or so children may be served at any one time, the group believes it is doing its part to help this holiday season.
