Juniors Sarah Walker, Becky Irvin, Eliza Deaver, William French, Spencer Nock and Lukiss Brooks are running their own lemonade stand.
Lemonade stands have long been a way for cash-strapped youths to make a few extra dollars in the summer heat, but these six students are not running a lemonade stand for themselves. They’re doing it to make a difference. The project is called “Alex’s Virtual Lemonade Stand Project.”
Captivating audiences with a performance of a sonnet and monologue from William Shakespeare, junior Sarah Walker placed as a semi-finalist at the 29th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition.
Few would have predicted a 6-2-1 start for the Vikings’ soccer team, but the team is playing with confidence behind the leadership of senior goalkeeper Caitlin West.
West, who plans to attend North Carolina State University to major in engineering, already has five shutouts in the Vikings’ first nine games.
Several neighboring counties have already made the change to school uniforms.
Now it may be Kinston High School’s turn.
Standard Mode of Dress, or SMOD, may already sound familiar to a lot of the students at Kinston High. Students who attended Rochelle Middle School have already experienced SMOD and more than likely will have to get used to it for a second time.
For the first time in school history, Kinston High School will host a second talent show at the Performing Arts Center on May 3.
The first, in March, attracted about 50 participants, but the audience was noticeably smaller than usual due to a conflict caused by a state playoff basketball game.

A county championship win for Kinston High School’s Quiz Bowl team last year serves as plenty of motivation for this year’s team.
The 2010-2011 Kinston High Quiz Bowl team, for the first time in recent history, won the Neuse Regional Library Competition. They defeated the defending champions, Arendell Parrott Academy, in a close battle. This victory for the quiz bowl team was their first ever county win under adviser Clay Stilley.
